Nowadays, the clinical management of chronic wounds has become increasingly necessary due to the emergence of numerous challenges in public health, quality of life and healthcare costs of the target society. Research confirms that electrical stimulation accelerates the wound healing process by enhancing cell proliferation and increasing the production of cytokine. This therapeutic approach, which has attracted attention due to its safety, simplicity, and cost-effectiveness, is inspired by the endogenous electric field, which plays a vital role in various stages of wound healing, including inflammation, proliferation, and re-epithelialization, but its clinical use is limited due to the need for bulky and complex external devices. To overcome this shortcoming, advanced piezoelectric wound dressings have been developed that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and provide the electrical stimulation necessary for wound healing. This technology can increase the effectiveness of treatment and, as a novel approach, introduces a new generation of skin dressings. In this article, the selection of piezoelectric materials and the main mechanism proposed in this type of materials, as well as their application in the design of this next generation of wound dressings, will be discussed.
