Quenching and partitioning (Q&P) heat treatment comprises thermal processes to achieve desired microstructures and mechanical properties in 13% chromium martensitic stainless steel (MSSs). This study investigates the effect of nitrogen addition and Q&P heat treatment parameters on the fraction of stabilized austenite phase and the mechanical properties optimization of 13% chromium stainless steel. The results showed that increasing the initial quenching temperature led to a rise in stabilized austenite fraction, reaching a maximum before decreasing at higher temperatures. Furthermore, with increasing nitrogen content from 0.005 to 0.13%, the maximum fraction of stabilized austenite increased from 13.4 to 15.9%, attributed to the synergistic effect of nitrogen and carbon on the stability and enrichment of stabilized austenite. The tensile testing results of the heat-treated samples showed that by increasing the nitrogen content to 0.13%, the tensile strength enhanced by 14% and the deformability increased by 7% compared to the sample containing 0.005% nitrogen.
