In this research, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized using the modified Hummers' method. The synthesized GO was subsequently functionalized with melamine and combined with chitosan (CH) to provide a suitable support for the uniform dispersion of nanoparticles. ZnFe2O4 (ZFO) nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized by various techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Subsequently, ZFO and platinum (Pt) nanoparticles were immobilized onto the melamine-functionalized reduced graphene oxide–chitosan (mRGO-CH) support to fabricate a platinum–zinc iron oxide/melamine-functionalized reduced graphene oxide–chitosan (Pt-ZFO/mRGO-CH) nanocatalyst. The electrocatalytic performance of the prepared nanocatalyst toward ethanol electrooxidation was evaluated and compared with that of a Pt/mRGO-CH catalyst. The Pt-ZFO/mRGO-CH catalyst exhibited significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation compared with Pt/mRGO-CH, demonstrating the beneficial role of ZFO nanoparticles in improving catalytic performance. These results indicate that Pt-ZFO/mRGO-CH is a promising electrocatalyst for application in direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs).
