In this work, the producing of IN617 welding rods using a power plant scrap component is explained. The mechanical properties and microstructure of the obtained welds has been investigated and is compared to the mechanical properties and microstructure of the welds obtained by commercial filler. Rolling and cutting methods have been used to produce the welding rods. The results show that the fracture strength of the welds (880 MPa) is comparable to the fracture strength of welds made using commercial welding rods (863 MPa). Also, microstructural studies show that the microstructure of the weld zone is similar to the microstructure of the weld zone obtained using commercial welding rods and includes Ti(C, N) particles, M6C carbides (rich in molybdenum), and M23C6 carbides (rich in chromium). Given that IN617 welding rods are imported from abroad and are not produced domestically, the method introduced in this research can be considered as a cost-effective method for producing these welding rods domestical.
